We "e" interviewed Paul from Get Fit Travel to see what his business is all about and this is what he had to say...

For those who don't know what is GetFit Travel?

GetFit Travel is a unique way for people to combine weight loss and travel. As most things in life when things become difficult many people’s first reaction is to quit. We wanted to stop this sort of behaviour by providing an additional goal; which is to prepare people for an adventure tour. Losing weight shouldn’t be a persons only goal, because frankly it is an ever moving target; however, if you include preparing to take an adventure tour at the end with the support and encouragement from caring staff, the light at the end of the tunnel becomes more bright and the lead up less daunting. But just training your body is not enough so we have included nutrition guidance to make sure that your body is getting the right amount of nutrients required. Setting you up with good eating habits that will carry on throughout the training and long after the tour has been completed. GetFit Travel have combined the travel and fitness together in an easy to manage solution, giving the client great savings and service. Our helpful and supportive staff are there to assist clients from start to finish, and of course once they return from their tour.

How does it work?

We have 2 options for people to take.  A self-guided Do-It-Yourself or a packaged deal. 

The packaged deal is obviously what GetFit Travel is all about. 

A client will select to purchase and upon doing so we will assist them in locking in the time frame to start their training in anticipation of their upcoming trip. We will assign them a team to join, for help and support, on their fitness journey and a nutrition guidebook to use.

If the clients are lucky they might even get to train during the week with Damian, Gregg or myself. We will do initial weight and body measurements to help track progress, because let’s face it we are all different and the scales might not reflect your hard work but the body measurements do.

Training will commence approx. 6 weeks out from the clients fly-out date, depending on the type of challenge the client undertakes will include some outside the gym training. These training sessions will be run on weekends and lengths will vary depending upon the intensity of the participants and the timing in relation to the start and fly out date. These training sessions are scalable to each participant and done with either Damian or myself.

Of course depending upon what trip they sign up for they could join either Damian or myself for any guided tours we participate in. 

The client will go on their adventure holiday whether it be a hiking based or cycle based challenge and start to see some wonderful sights whilst burning more calories. Each tour run has the option for the participants to carry their back pack or have it shipped to the next stop. Of course this is a great way for those who may start to struggle to ease up and rest before tackling it again. Meanwhile the die hards and those determined not to be stopped can opt for the pack the entire time.

Upon their return to normal life we will have a follow-up with the client/participants to see how they went and give them their final evaluation with a scale and body measurement. 

From this point onwards we involve Gregg to discuss on-going training options for the client to undertake if they choose to travel down this path. 

When did you start Get Fit Travel?

The concept for the idea was born in late 2014. We developed the idea over the next 9 months, getting in touch with the right people and businesses to partner with.

Mid 2015 is when we established the business and all the boring red tape that goes along with it, then launched the service and site at the start of 2016.

Why did you start GetFit Travel?

I started the company for a few reasons. 

Firstly, I saw how difficult it was for some people to get into exercising because their goal of loosing weight can sometimes become an overwhelming challenge that they can't achieve without support. Second reason was because it combined the things I love to do and provided me an opportunity to share this experience with others. 

Who did you go into business with (if you did)? Was this an easy choice?

The idea was born from discussions I had with a good friend of mine, Damian Day, about treks we had taken and wish to take in the future. Then we needed to get partnered up with the right people to make our dream a living reality. To do so we spoke with a close friend of ours Gregg Moxham whom owns RiseFit in Northbridge.  The three of us have known each other for almost seven years and it was an easy alignment for us. We feel working with others who are like minded is often the cornerstone to success . Gregg was able to easily identify the niche market which GetFit Travel will provide a service to and was eager to be associated with us.

The next people we needed to align with were UTracks and Sherpa Expeditions, who have a vast array of self-guided and guided tours which would serve as the goal for each of our clients. Partnering up with a company which has had a decade of success was extremely easy to make.

Finally we consulted a nutritionist and they were able to provide an easy to follow eating regiment. Nutrition plays a large part of our service offering but doesn’t require as much hands-on servicing but is regularly checked and re-evaluated.

What do you think makes you different to other companies in the same industry?

There are some other businesses similar to GetFit Travel on the east coast and in other countries, however the unique service offering and on-going support from the team is what sets us apart from other companies. And of course like many other companies who have succeeded we also intend to create a community out of those who find success and those who wish to help others smash through their previous self-doubting limitations.

How have you found is the best way to reach out to your consumers? 

Starting up it has been firstly getting friends and friends of friends who have been the easiest to approach and help understand the nature of what we are trying to achieve. Doing this allowed us to build up some credibility and has helped spread the word. 

Secondly using Facebook has been a great way target potential clients.  Thirdly it would be at local events run by shires, although these are normally dominated by gyms which have one core service offering.

What has been the hardest part of running your business? 

The constant juggling act between family, full-time work, training & personal goals. Remaining focused on the mutual commitment between myself and client is difficult, but well worth it in the end. Like some start-up businesses as you can imagine I have bills to pay which means that I have to split my time amongst my main job that provides me a regular income and with the business which provides me a passionate outlet.

Another challenge that I’m faced with is the extremely competitive market of fitness & training. But I didn’t start the business to make a million dollars, which would be nice but, it's my passion for fitness and travel which drives me.

What has been the most rewarding part of starting your own business?

There are many rewarding parts to starting a new business. Organising and nurturing a business is like having another child, you throw yourself into it fully with big dreams of what it will become. So when you have successes, whether big or small, you are overwhelmed with a sense of excitement. Then of course being able to share the experience with friends takes it all to a new level. Life was never meant to be easy or boring like sitting behind a desk, so being able to share these challenges with friends makes it that much more fulfilling.
