We e-interviewed one of our beautiful and hard working retailers - Julie New - founder of the up and coming Be Activewear.
For you mummas and small business entrepreneurs out there - we think you will find Julie's article very interesting.
Thank you Julie for your time and SIX30 fans we hope you enjoy our article below...
What is Be Activewear and why did you start it?
I started Be Activewear because there needed to be a place where if you were a size 6 or 26 and you wanted to wear bright pink tights, go out, get them and OWN IT . I love supporting women on their journey of being confident in their own skin and at the same time supporting amazing Australian brands.
We now stock over 50 brands, making it one of the best online Australian Activewear & Swimwear Shopping destinations.
Where did your business name come from?
I would like to say it is an interesting story… but it’s not. I was just chatting to my sister about starting the business and thinking of names and she said Be Active (which was already taken) so I thought Be Activewear…. Simple as that really.
What do you think makes you different to other online retailers in the same industry?
Having the desire to support other Australian brands gives me a focus to constantly look out for emerging brands and products, (many of which are new and run by other working mums) to help them grow – this is a big differential factor compared to other online retailers.
What have you found is the best way to reach out to your consumers?
It is definitely through social media channels, facebook and Instagram work well for us. As that is where our customers are.
You seem to have become very successful in a short period of time, what do you think is the main reason behind this?
Having spent over a decade in the finance industry taught me that you really need to invest in your business both with time and money.
I stated the business when I was working part time and was also a single mum of an 18 month old (so both time and money were EXTRMELY limited). I literally spent part of my grocery budget (which was already stretched at the time) to start $2 a day Facebook ads .
Every spare moment I had for the first 2 years I spent on the business and anything I made during that time I invested back into it for over 2 years.
What do you believe have been your best marketing practises?
I have always thought you could have the best business in the world, but if no one knows about it, it doesn’t really matter. So Advertising through our social media channels is the best marketing practice for us.
What has been the hardest part of running your business?
I think the hardest part was when I was still working part time and when my son was young. Being a single mum of a toddler, trying to manage a new business all while working was very difficult. However, I kept focusing on my bigger goals which helped me through those times.
What has been the most rewarding part of starting your own business?
It is actually from the customers, we get quite a lot of messages from customers saying how they bought an item and it gave them the confidence to get out there and start exercising. That is extremely rewarding to me.
For someone looking to start their own business, what would be your one piece of advice?
I have 2 pieces of advice which I hold strongly to, as a key factor of starting Be Activewear. 1. If you want to start a business or change careers but don't even know what you want to do, focus on how you like to work and build a business around that.
2. Just start - your idea / product / business / lifestyle that you start may turn out to be something completely different by the end... but you'll never know unless you start.
