Date: 6 April 2014

The YMCA of Canberra proudly hosted the 28th running of the Women and Girls’ Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 6 April 2014. It was a beautiful day in the capital, with an enthusiastic crowd and participants ranging from little ones in prams to energetic individuals in their eighties. The event was a big success and we saw some creative dress-up costumes, energetic school groups, mums and bubs, families, friends and work colleagues.

With smiles to be seen everywhere, participants enjoyed an energising warm up led by Michelle Wells from a’bloom personal training. Ginninderra MLA Yvette Berry, then fired the starters’ gun before jumping into the crowd to participate herself.

First across the line was Sarah McRae, the winner from 2010 and 2011 - who walked in 2012 pushing a pram. Second was triathlete Rhiannon Snipe, Australian representative at the World Ironman Triathlon Championships in Hawaii in 2012 and 2013. Rounding out our top quality medal winners was Claire Ashworth, who was second in last year’s Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon.

Among the team awards, Maribyrnong Primary and Merici took out the schools’ participation awards and earned $500 each for their schools. Michelle Wells led Mama Moves to another win the teams’ category, and they were awarded with $500 to donate to the charity of their choice, as well as taking out the ‘fastest 4’ team award.

For many people the greatest reward was crossing the finishing line. The event generated an impressive $5000 that will go directly to local charity Ovarian Cancer Support Group.
